Studies of the effects of hippocampal lesions imply that learning memory is strongly correlated with the hippocampus. This paper, from James McClelland and Randall O’Reilly of Carnegie Mellon and Bruce McNaughton of University of Arizona, discusses successes and failures of connectionist models of learning and memory and the effects of focused and interleaved learning on the acquisition of new knowledge and on interference with existing knowledge, among other things.
